History, Culture & Recreation
Moore County is considered the "Home of American Golf” and home to many prestigious golf resorts including Pinehurst Resort and Pine Needles Resort. Both resorts, in addition to other courses, have hosted numerous championship tournaments and events, including the U.S. Men's Open and Ladies Championships.

Although Moore County is a golfer’s paradise, there are so many other leisure activities to enjoy: tennis, bicycling, art galleries, theater, concerts, historic sites, civic organizations, fairs and festivals, scenic parks, nature walks, and children’s programs, just to name a few. In addition, Southern Pines is a nationally recognized center for equestrian activities for riders and spectators alike. At the heart of Southern Pines’ "Horse Country” is the Walthour Moss Foundation, a preserve of almost 3,500 acres with riding trails. Weymouth Woods offers almost 900 acres of natural Sandhills terrain.

Education .. Public, Charter and Private
The Moore County Public School system is composed of 22 schools: 14 elementary, 4 middle, 3 high, and 1 technical. Student Enrollment for the 2007-2008 school year was 12,334. Over 70% of Moore County public schools are recognized as "Schools of Excellence”, "Schools of Distinction” or "Schools of Progress". There are no less than 7 private schools in the County, including The O’Neal School (a college preparatory day school serving students Pre-K through 12), the Episcopal Day School (a K-5 Christian school), Sandhills Classical Christian School (a K-8 school using classical methodology), and Pope John Paul II Catholic School (serving K-6).
 Sandhills Community College
Sandhills Community College (SCC) includes the main campus in Pinehurst and 2 satellite campuses, Westmoore in northern Moore County and the Hoke Center in Raeford (Hoke County). The College serves over 14,000 students annually in a variety of programs in the areas of occupational studies, basic skills and community enrichment. SCC offers three college transfer degrees (Associate of Arts, Associate of Science and Associate in Fine Arts) and more than thirty technical programs leading to an associate’s degree, diploma or certificate. Sandhills Community College teams with the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, St. Andrews Presbyterian College and Franklin University to provide on-site bachelor’s and master’s degrees extension classes and programs.
 
Healthcare and Medicine
FirstHealth of the Carolinas is a private, non-profit regional healthcare system with its main hospital, Moore Regional Hospital, located in Pinehurst. The hospital is an acute-care facility with 385 licensed beds and offers a full-range of advanced healthcare services, as well as a Health & Fitness Center that residents can join. Moore Regional is ranked in the top 3.3% nationally for clinical excellence and has won national awards in the areas of cardiac care, orthopedics, and vascular services. Tricare is accepted by some local service providers.  
 

Shopping
Southern Moore County is experiencing a boom in new restaurants and retail stores. Just within the last 18 months, Best Buy, Bed Bath & Beyond, Ross Dress for Less, PetsMart, Rack Room Shoes, Tuesday Morning, Bonefish Grill, Panera Bread, Moe’s Southwest Grill, Chili’s, Stein Mart and Starbucks Coffee have all located in the Southern Pines / Aberdeen area.

Also the Moore County distinct Villages and towns offer many specialty boutiques, shops and cafes in the downtowns of Pinehurst, Southern Pines and Aberdeen to suit a variety of tastes. For the "big city” shopping experience, Raleigh and of course Fayetteville are each just an hour or less away and offer several large malls.


Employment Opportunities
Local assistance is available to help military spouses and other family members find full-time or part-time employment in Moore County. The Employment Security Commission and the Moore County JobLink Career Center are located in the same office in Aberdeen and offer a wealth of resources for convenient one-stop assistance. The services offered to job-seekers include job placement assistance, resumé preparation, and skills training, among others.
